Tampa Bay Wave Portfolio Companies Surpass $2 Billion Raised
Capital follows strong companies. Strong companies grow where founders can find the right support, relationships and opportunities.
Tampa Bay Wave’s portfolio companies have now collectively raised more than $2 billion in capital, marking a significant milestone for our founders and the broader Tampa Bay innovation ecosystem.
But this achievement represents far more than a number.
It represents founders who took bold ideas and built companies around them. It reflects mentors who shared their experience, investors who recognized opportunity and partners who helped create an environment where innovation could thrive.
Since 2013, Tampa Bay Wave has supported more than 670 startups that have created more than 7,600 jobs and completed 34 exits. Across 45 accelerator programs spanning six industry sectors, we have worked to connect entrepreneurs with the expertise, capital and relationships they need to build and scale high-growth companies.
A milestone built by a community
The $2 billion milestone was announced during Thursday’s BlueTech|X Pitch Night, an event that showcased the continued growth of innovation across Tampa Bay and the emerging blue economy.
For Tampa Bay Wave, this moment is the result of more than a decade of collaboration.
“Crossing the $2 billion mark is about far more than capital raised. It represents years of determination from founders, guidance from mentors, confidence from investors and the collective commitment of a community that knows innovation can thrive here in Tampa Bay,” said Linda Olson, founder and CEO of Tampa Bay Wave.
Every company supported through our programs becomes part of a larger story. Together, these founders are creating jobs, attracting investment and strengthening Tampa Bay’s position as a destination for ambitious entrepreneurs.
Tampa Bay’s national profile continues to grow
This milestone arrives during a period of growing national recognition for Tampa Bay Wave and the region’s innovation economy.
TIME recently ranked Tampa Bay Wave as the No. 3 startup accelerator in the United States and No. 1 in Florida. A recent grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration is also expanding resources available to support high-growth entrepreneurs and strengthen the region’s innovation economy.
These achievements point to something larger.
Tampa Bay is increasingly gaining recognition as a place where founders can access the support, capital and connections needed to scale. As a nonprofit, zero-equity accelerator, Tampa Bay Wave remains committed to ensuring entrepreneurs can pursue that opportunity while retaining ownership in the companies they are building.
The in-person cohort also builds on a growing virtual internship track between UEL and Tampa Bay Wave. Same partnership. More ways to connect. And whether students are working from East London or Tampa Bay, the goal remains the same: create relationships that last beyond an internship.
Paul Marshall of the University of East London sees the partnership as an important bridge between students and the Tampa Bay startup ecosystem.
“The first year of the UEL-Wave cross-border internships program has been a resounding success, with nearly 50 students at the graduate and undergraduate level gaining exposure to the tremendous companies in the Tampa Bay Wave network,” said Marshall. “All of us at UEL are excited for all that has been done and all things ahead with the partnership between our organizations.”
The next chapter starts now
Reaching $2 billion gives us an opportunity to recognize how far this community has come. More importantly, it challenges us to think about what we can build next.
The future of Tampa Bay’s innovation economy will depend on continued collaboration among founders, investors, mentors, corporate partners and community leaders. By strengthening those connections, we can help more entrepreneurs transform promising ideas into sustainable companies and create new opportunities across the region.
We are proud of this milestone. We are even more energized by the momentum ahead.
